Varykino Fire Update

High Level Update Monday April 29th

Most importantly we are all okay, Natasha and Mateo were visiting at the time of the initial fire.
A huge Thank you thank you thank you for all of your support, messages, love, food, IPA, taking care of Andri, Vit E oil for my scar, tea, places to stay, generators, toiletries, notebook,  and so so much more. The outpouring of support has buoyed us beyond measure. We couldn't have gotten through the first week without you.

1. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical wiring that was slowly disintegrating over time. It was the lighting circuit upstairs, a perfect storm, the heat from the fireplace, gusts of wind up to 25mph and compromised wiring (the original was 37 years old). After this fire was put out there was a rekindling overnight with subsequent flooding by the fire department.

2. This weekend we moved out of Michala's cute borough house to Lords point where we'll be through the end of May. Both houses have everything we need including healing energy.
If you're in the area please stop by.

3. We have two clean up crews assigned by the insurance company and they are amazing. Compassionate, kind and funny, they are trying to save as much as possible. One takes care of textiles and the other everything else.

4. It took 2 days to clean out the basement. Next the sunroom, aka my studio was emptied out into boxes and onto the lawn while I was at PT for my broken shoulder (that healing is going well!). It took me two days to sift through it. All the yarn and WIPs were taken away to Warwick RI to be cleaned. We'll see what comes back.

5. The downstairs is almost emptied out, a 2nd dumpster is full.

6. The epicenter upstairs (master bedroom and Ana's bedroom) is sealed off because there is a trace amount of asbestos in the popcorn ceiling (I always hated that ceiling). A special team is coming to tackle that on weds. The asbestos was another set back, everything is sitting under wet and smoke infused asbestos.

7. The house will be completely gutted and this project (Varykino 2.0) will probably take a year.

I'm going to be using blogger for updates even though it is clunky (I know Trish) because others like wordpress require a domain purchase yada yada yada.

I'll be off to the demolition zone as we affectionately call it shortly. The electrician is coming and clean up crew to continue emptying out the kitchen. Today we will tackle my "well stocked (some might say overstocked)" pantry. My job is to come up with cost estimates for the insurance company!

  1. Thank you for this update, Petra. What a huge undertaking. I'm sure there is grief in your hearts. Blessings. Wish I were there to help.
